Shirley Mae Hummel, nee Setzke, 89, passed away peacefully at Lightways Hospice on August 30, 2021. Beloved wife of the late Donald; proud and loving mom of Susan Zielinski and Charles (Kim) Hummel; cherished grandma of Heather (Patrick) Crehan nee Hummel, Donnie (Olivia) Hummel, Julie (Josh) Limp nee Zielinski, Joey (Melissa) Hummel and Sarah Zielinski; great-grandma of Oliver Limp. Sister of LaVerne (the late Willard) Miltzow. Fond aunt of many nieces and nephews in Illinois, Alaska, Colorado and Pennsylvania. Preceded in death by dear parents Raymond and Margaret Setzke and brother Russell (the late Jenann). Shirley was born and raised in Chicago and graduated from Harper High School. She worked in retail sales for Wieboldt’s before becoming a comp operator for General Electric then a homemaker when her children were born. She was the ‘Kenneth Ave’ mom. They all seemed to gather there as she always had the cookies and treats. Always there with a towel for the wet faces in the pool. She was active in the PTA and a Girl Scout leader. A forever cheerleader for Charlie’s football and baseball games and Susan’s softball games. While Charlie taught Don and Shirley how to golf, Shirley encouraged Susan to golf and in their first round of golf, Susan beat Shirley by 7 strokes and Shirley never let her forget it. When Don retired, she enjoyed traveling and playing golf. She accomplished a major feat, a Hole in One and still has the ball and certificate to prove it! Her greatest joy was her grand children. She was so proud of each and everyone of them. As she was with her children, she was the forever cheerleader at as many events as she could. With Don they were the proudest grandparents at graduations. She was so proud and excited to witness and be a part of her grandchildren’s weddings. Lastly, to see the joy in her face meeting her first great-grandchild Oliver was priceless. We are grateful for wonderful care team of Lightways Hospice, caregivers of Polonia In Home Care and Newsome Home Health Care. Family and friends are invited to meet with the family on Tuesday September 7, 2021 from 3PM to 9PM with a service at 7 :30 at Palos-Gaidas Funeral Home 11028 S.
