Irene Estelle Nicosia (nee Joy) of Chicago passed away peacefully on November 4, 2024, surrounded by the love of her family and caregivers at Grace Point Place Memory Care in Oak Lawn, Illinois. Irene was born on March 15,1938, the loving daughter of the late David and Eva (nee Perrin) Joy. Irene was raised in Chicago and graduated from Loretto High School in 1956. Irene met her beloved late husband Dominic Nicosia while attending high school. They were married on October 27, 1956 sharing 68 years of marriage filled with love and devotion. Irene is the beloved mother of Dominic (Elaine) Nicosia, Joseph (Janice) Nicosia, Donna Nicosia, Laurie (Patrick) O’Brien, and Joanne (Stephen) Mick. Cherished grandmother to nine and cherished great-grandmother to fifteen. Fond aunt to many nieces and nephews. Fond cousin, godmother, and friend to many. Irene was preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses Marie (Ronald) Carlson, Josephine Joy, David (Lenora) Joy, Elizabeth Joy, James Joy, Alice (Joseph) Palazzolo, Bernard (Delores) Joy, and Robert Joy.
Irene loved most being with her family and was happiest with her husband at her side. Irene loved being a wife and mom. She was the heart of her family. Irene worked various jobs before her employment with Hallmark Cards, retiring in 2003. During her retirement, Irene enjoyed golfing and vacation trips with her family. Irene especially enjoyed partaking in many fun adventures with her dear sisters. She was an avid reader and enjoyed puzzles and word games. Irene and her husband were inseparable from the first time they met, passing nine days after her beloved husband.
Family and friends will gather for a visitation on Friday, November 8, 2024 9:00 a.m until time of prayers 11:00 a.m. at the Palos Gaidas Funeral Home 11028 Southwest Highway, Palos Hills, IL 60465 to St. Germaine Church, Mass 11:30 a.m. Interment Holy Sepulchre Cemetery
