Romas Sakadolskis died in New York’s Mt. Sinai Hospital after a battle with cancer. Born in Fulda, Germany on May 31, 1947, he came to the United States with his family in 1949. From his youth, Romas was active in various Lithuanian émigré organizations. A long-time contributor to the Chicago Lithuanian radio program “Margutis,” he was employed by the US federally funded “Voice of America” in 1973. He worked in the organization’s Chicago bureau, in both the Lithuanian Service and the central newsroom in Washington, D.C. Upon retirement in 2004, he and his wife Emilija moved to Lithuania where he taught journalism at Vilnius University and Vytautas Magnus University.
The “Romas Sakadolskis Memorial Fund” is being established to honor his commitment to transparency in journalism and increased media literacy in Lithuania. The family requests that contributions be made to this fund (http://www.lithuanianfoundation.org/memorial-contributions/) in lieu of flowers.
The funeral will take place on Saturday, March 19 in Chicago. Memorial visitation will begin at 9:30 A.M at Immaculate Conception Church (2745 W. 44th Street). A memorial valediction will begin at 10:00 A.M., followed by the Memorial Mass at 10:30. The family invites Romas’ friends, colleagues and well-wishers to participate in the services, the inurnment at St. Casimir Lithuanian Cemetery, and the luncheon to follow.
